You have surely noticed a tiny round scar on somebody’s upper left arm. Do you know the reason behind this? This scar has appeared as a result of vaccination. As you know while being children you should get a treatment with a vaccine in order to stay safer against viruses or different diseases. The vaccines main reason is to affect the immune system by fighting with various bacterias that happen to move around your body!
The vaccine that we are talking about was very common before the 70’s years! It’s aim was to trigger an immune response by using Vaccinia virus that would protect people from the Variola Virus that caused smallpox.
This bad virus can be transmitted easily from body to another body. It has also some suffering symptoms like: vomiting, stomach pain, back pain, headache etc.
How this small scar appeared?
Even if many people were worried from this vaccination, they were obligated to take it. Otherwise they could be affected from the Variola Virus.
After the vaccination was done, small bubbles in the body formed (like blisters) which lead to develop a crust and then this healed in several weeks. And that’s why how this round round scar was left as a sign for the whole life. The doctors used a bifurcated needle dipped into the Vaccinia solution to deliver the vaccine. The individual’s arm was poked few times and each time the needle broke the skin, a tiny amount of the vaccine was inserted which caused blistering. That’s another cause why the scars become larger.
What Happens after getting the vaccine?
From the pressure of needle, a small swelling appears on the vaccinated spot and it lasts for 6 to 8 hours. Afterwards, the swelling goes away. After 6 to 8 weeks later, another swelling appears, similar to a mosquito bite. This swelling begins to grow and forms a nodule that breaks open and releases a fluid and an ulcer is created. The ulcer heals, but there is a scar left. In some individuals, the ulceration and healing process lasted recurred 2 to 3 times.
What occurred after the 70’s?
In the West, after the 70s, fortunately the smallpox disappeared; therefore, this vaccine was no longer a practice, unless someone went to a country where the virus was still active. In the 80s, the Variola virus was eradicated from the entire population and there was no longer a need for smallpox vaccines. Luckily, people no longer need to be afraid that this infection will get transmitted to them and this way they avoided the vaccine as well!
